The Traveler's Guide to Japanese Pilgrimages
Published in Paperback by Weatherhill (May, 1995)
Author: Ed Readicker-Henderson
Average review score:

Extremely reliable and well-written
Provides background information, history, and photos of 2 popular Buddhist pilgrimage routes in Japan, one of 33 temples (the Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage) and another of 88 temples (the Kobo Daishi pilgrimage) on the island of Shikoku. I used this book as my primary guide for my own Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage, and found the author's directions accurate and reliable! The author writes with knowledge and respect of these places. Even if you are not contemplating a religious journey, it has great info on sites not on most tourist routes. I would definitely look into any further editions/updates of this guide.

A Voice of One's Own: Conversations With America's Writing Women
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Co (Pap) (January, 1992)
Authors: Mickey Pearlman and Katherine Usher Henderson
Average review score:

SPEAKING THEIR MIND
Written a decade ago "A Voice Of One's Own", is a collection of twenty-eight women writer's relections about their craft of writing. The interviewer address to them the questions of what motivates, sustains and inspires them as writers. Unlike other interview collections this work is very inclusive in that it contains women from various racial, ethnic, regional, age and sexual preference groups.

Instead of a question and answer format as is usual in most interview collections, the interviewer decides to use a narrative form where one can see the interweaving of the answers and relections of the various authors. They become the center of focus, not the interviewer or the question. Three areas are prominently dealt with in this work.

1. The development of each woman as a writer. Harriet Doerr shares with us that she didn't consider herself a writer until she went to college at age 65.

2. How memory is linked to writing. Gloria Naylor's asserts that all writing filters itself through memory.

3. How children and family impact on writing. Most of the authors have children and share their thoughts about the challenges for that endeavor.

Having a voice and knowing how to creatively articulate it is a hallmark of this work. You will be inspired and reflective of your own writing as you hear these voices.

Welcome to Felicity's World, 1774: Growing Up in Colonial America (American Girls Collection (Cloth))

Colonial Life Becomes "Real" in Felicity's World/1774
I was amazed to find this title at the Texas Library Association Conference in Houston, Texas last week. The book jumped out at me when I passed the American Girls exhitbit booth. The colorful cover conveys a realistic scene from Felicity's time in U. S. History that took me back over 200 years. From the first page to the last, I was riveted to find out more details. The paintings, maps, and drawings help to tie together how colonists lived and carried out their daily chores in their families and in their communities. Cutaways and aerial scenes take the reader into the action of the time, especially those where girls and women were active in the Revolutionary War: Sybil Ludington who was a Patriot soldier and Eliza Wilkinson who refused to play her guitar for a British soldier. I give this book 5 gold stars and hope to read the other Welcome to the American Girl books soon.

Why I Am an Abortion Doctor
Published in Hardcover by Prometheus Books (March, 1996)
Authors: Suzanne T. Poppema, Mike Henderson, and Suzanne P. Poppema
Average review score:

Personal Look at the Issue of Reproductive Rights
American women are at a real crossroads as far as their reproductive rights are concerned. The historic Roe v. Wade decision of the early 1970s could actually be overturned in the next few years if Texas Governor George W. Bush is elected President. Bush would likely have to make several appointments to the Supreme Court, enough in all probability to overturn Roe v. Wade, given the current balance on the Court. Despite his reassurance that he will not attach a pro-life litmus test to his appointments, it is almost certain that his Supreme Court nominees would vote to overturn Roe.

Despite the fact that the right of women to choose an abortion is in peril, there is little consciousness of this fact in American society. Suzanne T. Poppema's book, Why I Am An Abortion Doctor, provides an exceptionally timely wake up call on the subject.

In her book, Dr. Poppema tells the fascinating story of how she rebelled against her family background and the school she attended, and became a committed feminist who rejected the paternalistic notion that the state should be able to govern women when it comes to matters of reproduction. She relates how she trained to become an abortion doctor and what it is like to run a clinic in an era when the anti-choice movement contains a fringe which is committed to taking violent, even lethal action to stop abortions. Dr. Poppema drives to work each day wearing a bullet proof vest. She has to deal with all of the barriers placed in the way of abortion clinics in American society today.

Her book eloquently tells the stories of women who choose to have abortions, because of their marital or financial circumstances, or for other reasons. The real life stories of women who have made the choice to terminate a pregnancy is a very useful antidote to the hateful propaganda which so often dominates the discussion.

Dr. Poppema explains how RU 486---the so-called abortion drug, developed in Europe---holds out the promise of replacing surgical abortions with this alternative, which is now widely available in France, and has been tried on an expermental basis in the United States.

Why I Am An Abortion Doctor is well written, absorbing and to the point on an issue that is bound to gain even greater prominence between now and election day in November.

Author: W. O. Henderson
Average review score:

A thorough study of the development of the Zollvein
Henderson work is a "must have" for every person who are interested in the making and development of the Zollverein. Whether you are a student of history or not, "The Zollverein" will give the reader a thorough knowledge of the factors that led to the establishment and development of the Zollverein. Henderson`s use of German sources and prior research for the book is extensive, and this(among others) makes it very usefull for the any student engaged in this period of German and continental history. As a bachlor student of European history I have found this book to be indispensable for my understanding of the economic development of the German terretories in the 19th century.
